Teachable alternatives: match the alternative to the actual problem

Teachable alternatives: match the alternative to the actual problem

By Marcus Webb · Pricing verified on vendor pages October 23, 2026 · Hands-on testing in progress — see note below

"Teachable alternative" is not one question. People leave Teachable for four different reasons — the fee, the product cap, the price floor, or the fact that it never had email worth using — and the right alternative is different in each case. Here is the map, with current prices: Teachable renamed its plans this year and removed its free tier, which most published comparisons have not caught up with.

The current Teachable, in one paragraph

Starter is $59 a month ($39 on annual billing) with a 7.5% transaction fee and five product slots. Builder is $119 ($89 annual) with 0% fees and ten products. Growth is $239 ($189 annual), 0% fees, fifty products. There is a 7-day free trial and no free plan. The full breakdown, and the break-even arithmetic, is in Teachable pricing explained.

If the problem is the 7.5% fee

The fee is only expensive when sales are real — below $333 a month it is cheaper than Podia Shaker's flat $84. Past that, three escapes:

If the problem is the five-product cap

Starter allows five products. A catalogue of templates, mini-courses or downloads hits that fast. Podia Mover allows 50 products at $42 a month — ten times the slots at two-thirds of the price — with the trade of a 5% fee and a 100-subscriber email cap. For a catalogue business with small ticket sizes, the fee is the cheaper problem: at ten $25 sales a month, Podia's 5% is $12.50, and the product ceiling never binds. Compare the whole ladders in Teachable vs Podia.

If the problem is the price floor

Teachable is a paid service now — $59 a month after a 7-day trial. Before you have sold anything, that is a real monthly bet on an unvalidated product. The free-entry options:

If the problem is email (the quiet one)

Teachable sells courses; its email tools have always been basic, which is why most serious Teachable creators run a separate email platform anyway. If you are paying for email twice, decide which platform owns the list:

The email platform comparison in isolation is in Kit vs Mailchimp and Kit vs MailerLite.

When to stay on Teachable

The case for staying is real and worth stating: the course player and delivery experience are why people chose it, the 7.5% fee is a small number below $333 a month, and switching platforms mid-launch is a 72-hour tax on your attention — see what switching tools actually costs. If your course sells and your complaint is only the fee, the Builder upgrade at $1,068 a year is often the cheapest alternative on this page, because it costs nothing in migration.

What we cannot verify

Teachable's prices come from the structured data on its own pricing page, verified October 23, 2026 — its plans were renamed and its free plan removed this year, so beware any comparison quoting Basic at $39 with 5% or a free tier with $1 + 10%: those are the retired lineup. Podia, systeme.io and Kit prices were verified on their own pages the same day. We have not run a course on any of these platforms, so delivery experience, checkout conversion, fee behaviour on refunds and email deliverability are unverified. Kajabi, Thinkific and LearnDash are frequently cited alternatives; we have not verified their current prices and do not print them. See How We Test.
