beehiiv alternatives: what to use if the take rate is not the point
beehiiv's pitch is the 0% take rate on paid subscriptions, and if that is your model it is genuinely hard to beat. But most newsletter operators do not charge readers. If you monetise through products, services or sponsorship, the take rate is irrelevant — and beehiiv's 2,500-subscriber free cap and 1-seat limit start to look like the wrong trade.
What you are leaving behind
beehiiv Lite at $49/month brings 0% on paid subscriptions, an ad marketplace, automations, A/B testing, a 100,000-subscriber cap, 2 seats and 12-month analytics. Pro at $95 adds unbranded pages, 10 seats, webinars and webhooks. The free plan stops at 2,500 subscribers, 1 seat and 30 days of analytics. Detail in our beehiiv pricing breakdown.
What is genuinely hard to replace: the recommendations network. Cross-promotion between publications is the most effective free growth channel in newsletters, and beehiiv's version is the most developed. Nothing below matches it.
The four alternatives
- Kit — free to 10,000 subscribers, Creator $33/mo. The reason to switch: you sell products rather than subscriptions, or your list is under 10,000 and you would rather not pay $49. Deeper creator commerce, four times the free headroom, best-in-class sending reputation. You lose the ad marketplace and the recommendations network. See beehiiv vs Kit.
- MailerLite — free to 1,000 with automations, Comfort $12/mo. The reason to switch: budget. A third of beehiiv's price with automations included on free. You give up nearly all subscriber headroom and any publishing-grade analytics.
- systeme.io — free to 2,000 contacts, Startup $17/mo flat. The reason to switch: you need funnels, checkout and email in one invoice, with 0% transaction fees on every tier. You give up newsletter ergonomics entirely — it is an email tool inside a business toolkit, not a publication platform. See systeme.io vs Kit.
- Your own stack — variable. A sending API plus a static site plus Stripe. Only rational past roughly 100,000 subscribers where platform fees dominate, or if you have an engineer. We do not price this because it depends almost entirely on your own labour cost.

The question that decides it
Will a reader ever pay you?
- Yes, within a year: stay on beehiiv. At $10/month and 500 paying readers, the 0% take saves roughly $500 a month against a 10% platform — more than your entire software budget.
- No — you sell products or services: Kit. Its commerce flow is aimed at exactly that, and free to 10,000 subscribers is a long runway.
- No — and you are spending nothing: stay on beehiiv free until 2,500 subscribers, then re-decide. Migrating twice is worse than either platform.
Two things to check before migrating
- Does the free plan include automations? beehiiv's and Kit's do not. If you rely on a welcome sequence, your effective cost on either is the paid tier, not $0.
- Can you take the recommendations network with you? You cannot. If a meaningful share of your growth comes from cross-promotion, price that loss honestly before switching.
What we cannot verify
Plan limits and prices above come from each vendor's pricing page, verified October 23, 2026, and we re-check quarterly. Subscriber-priced plans scale, so the figures are entry points at the stated list size. Our hands-on testing cycle is in progress — we have not run live campaigns across these platforms, so we cannot report measured deliverability, recommendation-network conversion, or migration fidelity for tags and segments. Findings will be added per our How We Test process.
