ClickUp pricing explained (2026): which plan a small team actually needs
ClickUp's plans look simple until storage limits, AI credits, and trial-gated features enter the picture. Here is what each tier includes, what it costs at real team sizes, and the honest answer for most teams under 20 people: the free plan is better than its reputation.
The four plans (verified October 22, 2026)
- Free Forever — $0. Unlimited members, unlimited tasks and subtasks, collaborative docs, kanban boards, calendar view, sprints, time tracking, 2FA, 24/7 support.
- Core — $9/user/month annual ($12 monthly). Unlocks more storage, 1,000 AI credits per user per month, and the full feature set beyond the free plan's trials.
- Business — $17/user/month annual ($25 monthly). More automations, more AI credits, the tier ClickUp pushes hardest.
- MAX / Enterprise — $100/user/month annual (MAX) or custom pricing. Enterprise-grade controls; irrelevant for most small teams.
The free plan's real limits (the part that matters)
ClickUp's free plan does not limit members — it limits comfort:
- 60 MB total storage — this is the binding constraint. Attach screenshots and PDFs to tasks and you will feel it in weeks. Cloud-file links (Google Drive, Dropbox) are the workaround.
- Some features are trial-only — custom fields, Gantt charts, timeline views, and video recordings appear available, then lock after the trial. Plan your workflow assuming they are paid features.
- 90-day chat history and 1 form per workspace.
- 500 AI credits per workspace as a trial of ClickUp Brain; not a rolling allowance.
Monthly math at 3, 8, and 20 people (annual billing)
| Team size | Free | Core | Business |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 people | $0 | $27/mo | $51/mo |
| 8 people | $0 | $72/mo | $136/mo |
| 20 people | $0 | $180/mo | $340/mo |
Which tier a small team actually needs
- Stay on Free if your team tracks work that lives in text — tasks, docs, checklists — and attaches files as links rather than uploads. Unlimited members on free is genuinely unusual and useful.
- Upgrade to Core if you hit the 60 MB storage wall, need custom fields for real (they anchor most serious workflows), or want recurring automations. $9/user/month is a fair price for exactly those unlocks.
- Business is for teams of 20+ or automation-heavy studios. Below that scale, most Business-tier extras sit unused. Do not buy it because a comparison table shaded it green.
Who should not buy ClickUp at all
- Teams that want a quiet tool. ClickUp is famously loud — notifications, upsell nags, feature sprawl. If your team ignores configuration, a plainer tool will stick better.
- Client-facing agencies needing polished guest UX on day one. Guest seats work, but setup effort is real. Test guest access before you commit (our hands-on guest-seat walkthrough is coming).
What we cannot verify
Plan limits and prices above are from ClickUp's own pricing page, verified October 22, 2026; prices change and we re-check quarterly. We have not yet completed our hands-on testing cycle — our full review will add account screenshots, real setup-time measurements, and the two friction points every review carries per our How We Test process. We cannot yet speak to long-term reliability or support response quality at paid tiers.
